Topic: Face to Face – Experiencing first-hand the Federations Impact in the Republic of Georgia & Israel
Jim and Alex travelled together between July 12th and 20th to Tbilisi, Georgia (of the former Soviet Union) and Israel. They will talk about their on-the-ground experiences coming face to face with the people and programs that Federation resources impact.
Bio Jim is the Director of Design Assurance at Fresenius Medical Care, and has worked in the medical device industry for 27 years. He has mechanical engineering degrees from University of Michigan (BS) and M.I.T. (MS), and is listed on 25 US patents. Jim is a past president of the United Jewish Federation of Utah, having served on its board for approximately 15 years. He is also a long time board member of Congregation Kol Ami, and has previously served on the McGillis School, JCC and JFS boards.
Alex is the Executive Director of the United Jewish Federation of Utah, a position he has held for five years. He is also intimately involved with the Jewish Federation of North America holding the title of Vice President of the Small Federations Board of Directors. A third generation Jewish Utahan, Alex and his family owned and operated Shapiro Luggage & Gifts, a chain of high-end retail stores in the intermountain west. The business originated in 1917 by his grandfather Simon… and was sold by Alex and his brothers in 2008, leaving a 91 year legacy in the community.
