Karen Azenberg was named the Artistic Director of Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) in 2012. She is the first woman to hold that position in the theatre’s 54-year history. Since arriving at PTC, she has directed and/or choreographed 15 mainstage productions including the regional premiere of Sting’s THE LAST SHIP. Ms. Azenberg has directed and/or choreographed over 60 productions including national tours of CAROUSEL and BRIGADOON for the Troika Organization, the regional theatre premiere of Neil Simon’s LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, choreography for the regional theatre premiere of LES MISERABLES at PTC, and at least 14 productions of WEST SIDE STORY. In New York she choreographed THE DAZZLE (Roundabout- Grammercy Theatre) as well as directing and choreographing the cult musical PROM QUEENS UNCHAINED and BLOCKS, a collaboration with the late Jonathan Larson. She also has many regional theatre credits. She is well-known in national theatre circles through her leadership of SDC, the national union for professional directors and choreographers, and as a Board member of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, a preeminent launching pad for new musicals.
