FROM LAWYER TO HISTORIAN
Ed Rutan, the former City Attorney for Salt Lake City, has written a fascinating book about the experiences of Civil War soldiers caught up in the last grueling year of this staggering conflict. Digging deeply into the personal records and papers of members of the 179th Regiment of New York, in which his great-great grandfather served, Rutan has crafted a tale rich in little-known historic and surprising details.
About seven years ago, he requested a copy of the military file of his great-great grandfather and what began as a family history project transitioned into a full blown history of the 179th New York Volunteers. In addition to historic battles, his book covers such topics as recruiting, desertion, prisoners of war, medical care as well as religion in the lives of the soldiers.
A Harvard law school graduate, Rutan served in the legal department of AT & T where he was eventually posted to Brussels as Counsel for Europe and the Middle East.
